PROGRAM 23 - 24 April
'Pigeons !', Artémise Ploegaerts, Bea McMahon, Irina Baldini
/ 23 APRIL, 19h30 /

While one attempts to fly, the other two laugh and whisper. Will someone chase them? You never know.
Are they from the same species? They are convinced they are birds, although they have teeth! She disgusts them and so they plot to poison her with her own flesh. They fear her. She envies them.

‘Pigeons !’ is a performance project initiated by Artémise Ploegaerts and developed together with visual artist Bea McMahon, and dance artist and punk singer Irina Baldini. It combines choreography with vocals and text.

The domestic pigeon has a bad reputation.
Witches have bad reputations.

Pigeons have claws, beaks and grey feathers.
Witches have long nails, hooked noses and grey hair.

Too many pigeons are repulsive.
Too many witches are disturbing.

Pigeons thrive.
Witches have orgies and cast deadly spells.

Pigeons are now.
Witches were in the Renaissance.

Fear and disgust are without reason.
Oh the absurdity of it all!

'BoBo Nail Salon', Wen Bo
BoBo Nail Salon is an ongoing participatory art project that explores nail art as a medium for dialogue and examines the experiences of women in the service industry. Rooted in personal and cultural identity, the project seeks to foster a deeper understanding of cultural narratives surrounding women while prompting reflections on the societal roles they navigate across different contexts.
In Bobo Nail Salon, the artist creates an intimate, interactive space where conversations unfold around the power dynamics between service providers and recipients. The nail industry, often associated with gendered and racialized stereotypes, serves as both the conceptual and physical framework for this exchange. Participants are invited to engage in a symbolic transaction: instead of monetary payment, they offer a secret—something deeply held and unspoken—in return for a meticulously crafted nail design. To mark this exchange, the artist cuts a small lock of the participant's hair and seals it onto the nail, embodying the act of releasing, returning, and safeguarding the secret.
Each BoBo Nail Salon session lasts around one hour, during which the artist engages in a one-on-one exchange with the participant through conversation and nail art. As an evolving and growing project, it continues to expand through new encounters, inviting more participants—regardless of background—to engage in this shared ritual of intimacy, vulnerability, and transformation.
'GRUNT', Diane Mahín
In GRUNT, the audience meets a woman who communicates solely through growls and grunts. This growler navigates various moods, portraying what seems to be an urgent story to be told or an intimate conversation to be held. While she attempts to tell a joke, the audience is met with dark, trauma-laden growls, turning humor into a shadowy reflection. When she reaches out tenderly, all she can express is violence.

What begins as an awkward encounter full of innocent misunderstandings gradually escalates into a desperate need for connection. As she fails to bridge the communication gap with the audience, her growls become more frantic, as she starts propelling them into space while hoping for some kind of response. The vocalizations transform from deliberate attempts to communicate into involuntary, visceral outbursts, culminating in a violent expulsion of sound.

GRUNT explores the effects of trauma through the primal language of vocality and physicality. The hidden layers of trauma emerge through the growls, revealing a raw and unfiltered expression of inner turmoil.
Inspired by the distorted vocals of Death Metal, Diane began growling a year ago, studying under professional Metal singers. She is drawn to growling for its immediate invocation of darkness and its cathartic potential for both the growler and the listener, finding a unique blend of humor and pathos in the juxtaposition of gestural intent and and sonic expression.
